| Mulu Baltena Ethiopian Restaurant (201) 946-0880 713 Bergen Avenue Jersey City, NJ 07306 (six blocks from Journal sq.) Mulu Baltena Ethiopian café is located in the Mcginely square section of Jersey City at 713 Bergen Ave between Fair mount and Duncan Avenues. mulu baltena The name Mulu Baltena comes from the Amharic language mainly spoken in Ethiopia. It's simple translation to English means "complete gourmet". The café serves a variety of authentic fine cuisines ranging from a choice of chicken, beef, lamb and fish dishes to a host of vegetarian delicacies for those who are strictly vegetarian. The name Mulu Baltena has also been inspired by the tireless mother of six, chef Mulu to whom most of the credit for the unparalleled home style cooking is deservedly owed. Chef Mulu's actual name is Mulunesh and most people affectionately address her as Mulu in short. Chef Mulu's gourmet style cooking of fine Ethiopian cuisines has won her praise and especially made her Teff injera the Injera of choice in many Ethiopian house holds as far north, in Connecticut and the south in Philadelphia. Chef Mulu's injera is perhaps the only injera worthy of the name Teff injera in the entire metropolitan area. A well prepared Ethiopian cuisine usually takes several hours to prepare and requires a well equiped kitchen, one that has a great venting system. With this in mind, Mulu Baltena offers a host of dishes for families who yearn to eat well prepared healthy yet tasteful dishes. We cater to large events such as for the celebration of Chrismas and Easter to several churches in the area. We also provide a full service catering to weddings and other functions. Testimonials Ethiopian March 15, 2004 I've written several times about how I get psycho over good local restaurants I fear are struggling for business. It gets to the point where I can't even pass by the front door without freaking out and doing a head-count. I'm glad to say I'm not alone. Jersey loyalist Amy Wilson is having a similar problem up in McGinley Square. See, there's this Ethiopian place up there called Mulu Baltena (713 Bergen Avenue). Amy swears it's the best restaurant in town, the best Ethiopian food she's ever eaten, and she implores you -- yes, you -- to take a trip up the Palisade to visit. Here's Amy, on her site: A couple of times I've gone to places that I was told had absolutely amazing food... only to be sorely disappointed. Mulu Baltena, however, is absolutely exceptional. It's cheap to boot -- for between $6-$11 you can get an order of more food than you know what to do with.... All I can tell you is that it's completely wonderful, the people who run it are lovely, and it's affordable. I don't have a menu in front of me to tell you the exact dishes to order, but here's a start: there's an amazing chilled tomato and onion dish; all the lentil dishes are solid; if collard greens are your thing (and they're definitely my thing) then their collard greens rock. McGinley Square isn't a neighborhood that hipsters visit often, but it's not tough to get to: take the path to JSQ, get off, walk south on Bergen Avenue for a few blocks. Conversely, head up the Montgomery Street viaduct, pass the Medical Center and the Armory, and you're there. I'm not feeling well right now, but I'm going to take her advice and visit as soon as I'm better. As for you, do Amy a favor and consider a trip to Mulu Baltena the next time you're trying to decide where to eat out.
